The Ultimate Beginner’s Guide to Solar Panel Battery storage

As it stands, there are approximately 1.2 million homes in the UK fitted with solar panels. in 2021, solar panels contributed to the generation of over 12,000 megawatts of power across England alone.

While solar panels are a great way to create electricity using renewable resources, they can’t store the power they generate. This means that unless it’s utilised immediately, a large percentage of the solar panels’ output is wasted.

Having a storage battery for solar panels make it possible to store solar energy for later, which can lead to huge savings on your energy bills.

At Save Energy UK, we specialise in the installation of solar systems in both domestic and commercial properties. In this guide, we’ll discuss everything there is to know about battery storage for solar, from upfront costs and benefits to installation and maintenance.

What is a solar battery?

A solar panels battery will store excess solar energy that isn’t used straight away, making it possible to power appliances using the sun’s energy later on – such as in the evening or at night.

A solar panel storage battery is roughly the size of a flatscreen TV and comes with varying capacities. On average, homes use around 8 kWh of electricity every day. Solar batteries can range in capacity size, with the smallest storing approximately 1 kWh of electricity and the largest storing up to 15 kWh.

When a solar panel receives sunlight, it converts the energy into direct current (DC) electricity. The DC current is then converted into alternating current (AC) electricity that can be used to power your home. Depending on the type of battery for solar panels you buy, it will be able to either store excess AC or DC electricity.

This stored energy can then be used at any time to power the home. This can reduce your household’s reliance on the National Grid, lowering your energy bills and providing back-up power during power cuts.

What are the benefits of storing solar energy?

Homeowners without a solar battery often only use 30 – 40% of the energy generated by their solar PV panels. By contrast, a recent study published in the journal Applied Energy has shown that installing a battery can reduce how much electricity a household imports from the grid by up to 84%.

According to the Eco Experts, solar panels alone could save an average three-bedroom house £449 a year. Add a solar battery on top of this and you could save an additional £219!

The money-saving potential is one of the biggest benefits of installing solar batteries. Plus, if you already have solar PV panels, you’ll be able to make better use of the energy they’re generating, instead of having to sell half of the power they’re harvesting back to the National Grid.

Other benefits of having a solar battery include: less dependency on the National Grid, a reduction in your home’s carbon footprint, and greater energy security for your home.

Based on the speed the solar battery market is growing at, forecasting an expected annual growth rate of 15.5% between 2022 and 2030, it’s clear that the benefits of owning a solar battery are being recognised across the world.

Are solar batteries affordable?

Initial costs

On average, a 4-kW solar battery will cost approximately £4,500 to buy outright.

Price will vary depending on the size and capacity of the battery; however, you can expect your solar battery investment to sit between £2,500 – £6000.

As a rough guide, it helps to know that each 1 kW of storage will cost approximately £1000, or slightly more.

The size of battery needed will depend on the size of your home and how many solar panels you have.

It’s worth checking out some of the funding schemes available to households looking to set up a solar panel system, as this can also help with the costs.

Installation costs

The cost of installation can vary by provider, but it’s definitely worth factoring into your budget when shopping around for solar batteries.

Getting a quote can be a good way to compare installation costs. According to Household Quotes, installation can vary between £500 – £1000.

Do solar batteries need replacing?

Solar batteries can last for up to 15 years before needing replacing. However, it is possible that their storage capacity will start to reduce over time.

Many solar batteries come with a warranty of several years, so this can offer a good indication of how long the battery is expected to last before needing replacing.

Solar panels tend to require replacing roughly every 25 years. Therefore, it is likely that a solar battery will need replacing at least once within the lifetime of your solar panels.

What are the different types of solar battery?

There are a number of of options to consider when buying a solar battery. You’ll need to choose between a lead acid battery or a lithium-ion battery, and decide whether to go for a battery that stores AC or DC electricity.

Lead acid vs lithium-ion batteries

Lead acid batteries are cheaper than lithium-ion batteries, but they have a shorter lifespan.

A flooded lead acid battery will last for up to seven years, whilst a sealed lead acid battery will last for up to five years.

Lithium-ion batteries are more expensive than lead acid batteries but tend to last for 10 years+. Another advantage of a lithium-ion battery is its size – these batteries are less bulky than lead acid batteries and take up less space in the home.

AC vs DC batteries

We’ve already mentioned the fact that solar panels convert the sun’s energy into DC electrical current.

Therefore, a DC solar battery can store the power directly, without the need for conversion. An AC solar battery, on the other hand, needs to convert the power first before it can be charged.

If you are fitting new solar panels to your home, at the same time as buying a solar battery, you can choose which system will work best for you.

If you already have a solar PV system, you will likely need an AC solar battery. This is much easier to fit to an existing system.

Can solar batteries save you money?

This is the big question. Essentially – is it worth fitting your home with a solar battery?

As mentioned, a solar battery has been shown to help households save an additional £219 per year on their energy bills.

It’s well known that the price of electricity is continuing to rise, but fortunately the cost of solar batteries is gradually going down. This means that the initial investment is becoming more worthwhile.

Even better, batteries offer convenience and independence, as well as the chance to reduce your household’s carbon footprint and reduce the amount of electricity you need to import.
